All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing. The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.
This walking holiday in the UK operates March to September and in either direction.
The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.
Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of the UK or Ireland. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Chepstow
To start your walking holiday on the Wye Valley Walk you make your own way to Chepstow. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary, just ask one of our staff. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided river walking holiday. At Chepstow the Wye Valley Walk connects with Offas Dyke Path and Wales Coast Path.
Day 2: Chepstow to Tintern 6 miles/10kms
The Wye Valley Walk starts at Chepstow castle which dates back to the 11th century and passes Tintern Abbey Tintern dating back to the 13th century.
Day 3: Tintern to Monmouth 11 miles/18kms
The walking path follows the track bed of the old Wye Valley railway from Tintern Station to Redbrook. On arriving in Monmouth the Wye Valley Walk crosses the river via a bridge with a fortified 14th century gatehouse.
Day 4: Monmouth to Goodrich 13 miles/20kms
You can take an optional detour up to Symonds Yat Rock which is rewarded by spectacular views. The walking trail follows the route of the old GWR Railway which ran between Ross on Wye and Monmouth and offers fine views of the Norman castle at Goodrich.
Day 5: Goodrich to Brockhampton 12 miles/19kms
The walking trail goes through Ross on Way, then through the quaintly named hamlets of Hole in the Wall and Totnor where the area teams with wildlife.
Day 6: Brockhampton to Hereford 10 miles/16kms
This area is famous for cider and has many fine orchards. The city of Hereford has much to see including a fine cathedral, the world famous Mappa Mindi, a 13th century map of the world, and a cider museum.

There is so much to see in Hereford that it is worth spending an extra day/s to take in the architecture and atmostphere.
Day 7: Hereford to Staunton on Wye 12 miles/19kms
After leaving Hereford the walking trail stops hugging the river temporarily and visits the villages of Sugwas Pool, Kenchester, before returning to the river at Byford.
Day 8: Staunton on Wye to Hay on Wye. 11 miles/18kms
After leaving Bredwardine the walking route climbs Merbach Hill from where, on a clear day, you can see eleven counties! Hay-on-Wye is famous for its proliferation of second hand bookshops and is the gateway to the Welsh section of the Wye Valley Walk. At Hay-on-Wye you can connect with Offa’s Dyke Path.

There is so much to see in Hay-on-Wye explore the many book shops or take a canoe trip on the River Wye.
Day 9: Depart after breakfast
Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring this interesting part of Wales

Please note the Hay Festival will take place in Hay on Wye from Thursday 22nd May to Sunday 1st June 2025.
This affects the availability of accommodation in Hay on Wye.
