All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing. The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.

The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Llangurig
To start your walking holiday on the Wye Valley Walk you make your own way to Llangurig. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary, just ask one of our staff. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided river walking holiday.
Day 2: Hafren Forest to Llangurig 12 miles/19kms
You start your day by being transfered to the Hafren Forest information centre. In the Hafren Forest the Wye Valley Walk connects with Glyndwrs Way. The Wye Valley Walk passes through the Tarenig Forest, Sweet Lamb rally complex and the Nant lago lead mine dating back to the Bronze Age. Although Llangurig was founded in the 6th century by St Curig, the town is famous for its Arts and Crafts style fountain and old police station.
Day 3: Llangurig to Rhayader 12 miles/19kms
The highlights of todays hike on the Wye Valley Walk is the Gilfach nature reserve. This is a traditional hill farm run by Radnorshire Wild Life Trust. There is a visitor centre in a 16th century longhouse. Todays walk ends in the historic town of Rhayader
Day 4: Rhayader to Newbridge on Wye 9 miles/14.5kms
The River Wye enters a rocky channel as it leaves Rhayader. This is where the town got its name as it means “the waterfall of the Wye”. The falls below the bridge are impressive, especially when the river is in spate.
Day 5: Newbridge on Wye to Builth Wells 7 miles/11kms
Rest awhile next to Penddol Rocks, a very picturesque area of rapids and deep pools. Then the route leaves the riverbank and passes through the rolling countryside of the heart of Wales.
Day 6: Builth Wells to Boughrood 13 miles/21kms
The walking trail crosses the River Wye via the Llanstephan suspension bridge, one of the very few wooden decked suspension bridges left in Wales. The walking path leaves the river today and climbs up onto up to high common ground giving great views of the Wye Valley. Then down hill into Builth Wells, which during the Victorian Era became a poplular place to “take the waters.
Day 7: Boughrood to Hay on Wye 8 miles/13kms
Today you are back following the bank of the river for most of the day before arriving in Hay on Wye. Hay-on-Wye is famous for its proliferation of second hand bookshops and is the gateway to the Welsh section of the Wye Valley Walk. At Hay-on-Wye you can connect with Offa’s Dyke Path.

There is so much to see in Hay-on-Wye explore the many book shops or take a canoe trip on the River Wye.
Day 8: Depart after breakfast
Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring this interesting part of Wales.
