This 60 mile self guided Exe Valley Way walking holiday takes in Exmoor and Exeter in Devon.
This is a great introduction to the joys of a West Country walking holiday as it combines a pleasant stroll with experiencing the unspoilt areas of Devon and Exmoor.
The Exe Valley Way explores this beautiful valley from the South West Coast Path on the Exe Estuary to the village of Dulverton on Exmoor, where you can link up with the Two Moors Way.
Our self-guided walking holidays are designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind and can be tailor-made to your own personal requirements.
The routes are clearly way-marked to provide reassurance on your hiking vacation.
We use a selection of guest houses, inns or small hotels with en-suite or private bathroom to ensure you are well rested each night after a busy day hiking and sightseeing. Rest assured that all our accommodation walking holiday providers are hand-picked and offer you that famous British hospitality.

We organize the luggage transfer so your bags are at your next accommodation when you arrive. We try to get your bags delivered by 4pm, but this may be delayed due to road conditions.

Our offices are staffed 9am to 9pm during our walking season (March to September) to ensure your walking holiday runs without a hitch.
All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing. The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.
This walking holiday in the UK operates April to September and in either direction.
These daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.
Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of England or the UK. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Exeter
You make your own way to Exeter. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of the walk. At Starcross the Exe Valley Way connects with the South West Coast Path.
Optional Day exploring Exeter
Spend an optional day exploring Exeter. Visit Exeter cathedral, or the underground passages, the catacombs, or the very fine museum. Guided walking tours are available showing Exeter’s Roman past.
Day 2: Starcross to Exeter 8 miles easy
Your walk starts at the mouth of the River Exe at Starcross. The Exe Estuary is famous for its bird life. After passing Powderham Castle you walk along the Exe Canal, the first in Britain, until you reach Exeter Quay.
Day 3: Exeter to Thorverton 10 miles easy
Stroll along the winding river through the quaint village of Brampford Speke to Thorverton.
Day 4: Thorverton to Tiverton 8 miles easy
Past the medieval Bickleigh Castle to the very picturesque bridge at Bickleigh. Stroll around Bickleigh Mill and Railway Centre before you leave Bickleigh. A short stroll along the east side of the river through rich woodlands of oak and ash, with violets and early purple orchids, brings you to Tiverton.
Day 5: Tiverton to Bampton 8 miles
The route meanders through the Exe river valley to the village of Bampton for your overnight.
Day 6: Bampton to Dulverton 6 miles
The route continues to meander through the Exe river valley via the villages of Exebridge and Brushford. You are in the Exmoor National Park now and may see the spectacular red deer.
Day 7: Dulverton to Exford 11 miles
Leaving the interesting village of Dulverton you follow the River Barle and the Two Moors Way to Hawkridge, visiting Tarr Steps, then on to Exford for the overnight stop.
Day 8: Exford to Exe Head 9 miles
Following the River Barle and the Two Moors Way you walk to Simonsbath, then up on to high Exmoor to find the source of the River Exe at Exehead. You retrace your step back to Simonsbath
Optional Day: Simonbath and Exmoor
Take an extra day to explore Exmoor.
Day 9: Depart after breakfast
Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring the Exmoor area
