Glyndwrs Way Walking Holiday
in Wales
from Knighton to Welshpool via Machynlleth
Abbeycwmhir, Llanidloes, Lake Vrnwy and Meifod
Walk Glyndwr’s Way, one of Wales’ long distance walking trails. Hiking in the Heart of Wales from Knighton to Welshpool via Lake Vyrnwy, Machynlleth, Lyn Glaslyn , Llanidloes, and Abbey Cwm-hir
Glyndwr’s Way is a 135 mile (217 km) clearly way-marked long-distance walking trail.
Glyndwr’s Way is the youngest of Wales’ three National Walking Trails, others being Offa’s Dyke Path and The Pembrokeshire Coast Path. The walking holiday begins on the English border, and traverses open moorland, farmland and forest en-route to Machynlleth, on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. Then you walk eastwards and inland again, hiking past beautiful Lake Vyrnwy, to finish the Glyndwr’s Way walking holiday in Welshpool.
This Welsh self guided Glyndwrs Way walking holiday hikes through some of the highlights of Wales and is a great introduction to walking holidays in Wales and the UK.
The Glyndwr’s Way tour walks through some of Wales’ most spectacular landscapes full of wildlife and heritage and The Welshpool and Llanfair Light Steam Railway is on route, one of Wales’ great little steam railways.
Owain Glyndwr was proclaimed Prince of Wales in 1401. His army and guerrilla forces fought against English domination, a battle for Welsh independence which continues in a less violent form until this day. Glyndwr’s Way remembers this folk hero’s contribution to the Welsh nation. Machynlleth, where he established his parliament, is one of several sites en route linked to his life and work.
This is popular walking tour, so we have carefully selected comfortable accommodation to ensure you are well rested each night after a busy day hiking and site-seeing.
You can walk this hiking tour over 10 days at about 13 miles per day. You can also make it into a circular walk by returning to Knighton by way of Offa’s Dyke Path.
Our Glyndwrs Way walking holiday connects with:
- Offas Dyke Path at Knighton and Welshpool
- Wales Coast Path at Machynlleth
- Wye Valley Walk at Hafron Forest

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Knighton
To start your walking holiday on Glyndwr’s Way walking trail you make your own way to Knighton. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided walking holiday in Wales.
Day 2: Knighton to Felindre 15 miles/24 kms
The hiking route starts from the Welsh border town of Knighton, which is also on Offas’s Dyke Path walking trail. Offas’s Dyke is an ancient earthwork nestling in the Teme Valley. Today’s walking route involves some climbing up to the open views and heather moorland of Beacon Hill.
Day 3: Felindre to Abbeycwmhir 16 miles/26 kms
Glyndwr’s Way today offers rewarding views south to Wales’ famous Brecon Beacons. The walking trail passes historic Abbeycwmhir, site of the 12th century Cwmhir Abbey. Once Wales’ largest abbey, Cwmhir was destroyed by Glyndwr in 1401 having fallen into English hands.
Day 4: Abbeycwmhir to Llanidloes 16 miles/26 kms
Walking through pretty woodland paths, Glyndwr’s Way provides excellent views of the Severn Valley as the hiking trail continues through Mid Wales to Llanidloes. Don’t miss the beautiful black-and-white timbered market hall at the heart of this friendly town.
Day 5: Llanidloes to Dyliffe 15 miles/24 kms
The walking trail offers a reminder of Wales Industrial Age, as the hiking trail skirts the spectacular Llyn Clywedog reservoir, also home to the Bryntail Lead Mine, which was in operation in the 18th century. Not that these man-made features really encroach on the natural splendour of this area of Wales, and there are superb views over the Welsh Cambrian Mountains to the south. You finish the day in Hafren Forest which is the source of the River Wye and the River Severn and therefore there are connections to both the Wye Valley Walk and the Severn Way.
Day 6: Dyliffe to Machynlleth 15 miles/24 kms
Today you walk to one of this Welsh walking holiday’s high points – Foel Fadian at 1,530 ft (510m), and you end the walk in Machynlleth, site of Glyndwr’s Parliament House. At Machynlleth Glyndwrs Way connects with the Wales Coast Path.
Day 7: Machynlleth to Llanbrynmair 16 miles/26 kms
Today’s walking offers great views of Cader Idris, one of Wales’ highest mountains. The walking route heads inland from Machynlleth along Snowdonia’s eastern boundary.
Day 8: Llandynmair to Llangadfan 11 miles/18 kms
Walking through farmland and coniferous forest you come to the village of Llangadfan, which was named after the Breton Saint Cadfan, who came to Wales in the 7th century. A fine little 15th century church commemorates the holy man.
Day 9: Llangadfan to Lake Vyrnwy 7 miles/11 kms
Walking north the impressive Vyrnwy Dam is surrounded by superb scenery. The lake’s reserve is a delight for birdwatchers, with peregrine falcons among the 90 species recorded in this area of Wales.
Day 10: Lake Vyrnwy to Meifod 15 miles/24 kms
Today the Glyndwr’s Way walking path is shared with the Ann Griffiths Walk. The walking trail commemorates Ann Griffiths, an 18th century Methodist hymn writer and a significant female figure in Welsh literature. This is one of the less strenuous hiking days encountered on the walking tour as the route follows the Vyrnwy Valley.
Day 11: Meifod to Welshpool 11 miles/18 kms
A uphill hike from Meifod brings you to the top of Broniarth Hill, and fine views of the Vyrnwy Valley. Walking on through farmland until the Montgomeryshire Canal is reached. You may catch a glimpse of a steam train on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, one the great little railways of Wales. This is a 16 mile narrow gauge steam railway linking Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion. The Glyndwr’s Way walking holiday ends in Welshpool, home to 13th century Powis Castle, which incorporates the Clive Museum and has Italianate terraced gardens, an orangery, and an aviary.
Day 12: Depart after breakfast
Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring this interesting part of Wales
We can transfer you to your car or station.
You can also make this walking holiday into a circular tour by returning to Knighton by way of Offa’s Dyke Path.
