Offas Dyke Path Walking Holiday
in Wales
A Welsh Coast to Coast hiking holiday from Chepstow to Prestatyn
via The Wye Valley, Tintern Abbey, Llanthony Abbey, Hay-on-Wye, Knighton, Welshpool, Llangollen and River Dee.
Offa’s Dyke Path is one of Wales’s long-distance walking trails, between Wales’ North coast at Prestatyn and the mouth of the River Wye and the Severn estuary at Chepstow, via Llangollen, River Dee, Knighton, Hay-on-Wye, Llanthony Abbey, Tintern Abbey and Chepstow.
The Offas Dyke Path walking holiday is on a 177-mile way-marked long-distance walking trail. This hiking tour can be walked in either direction.
This Welsh self-guided Offas Dyke Path walking holiday hikes through some of the highlights of Wales and is a great introduction to walking holidays in Wales and the UK. The Offa’s Dyke Path passes through some of Wales’s most spectacular landscapes full of wildlife and heritage.
The walking trail officially opened in 1971 but this long-distance hiking path follows an earthwork of much greater antiquity. Built by King Offa of Mercia in the 8th century, Offa’s Dyke formed the ancient frontier between England and Wales. There are no border skirmishes these days, but you’ll find miles of quiet, uninterrupted Welsh countryside, stunning mountain ranges and a plethora of wildlife.
You’ll encounter the Severn and Wye Rivers as the walking path winds between Denbighshire and Monmouthshire. Cultural heritage sites are in abundance, from the Palaeolithic Pontnewydd Cave, home to Wales’ earliest known settlers, to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct from the Industrial Age.
The Offas Dyke Path walking holiday connects with:
- Wales Coast Path at Prestatyn and Chepstow
- Glyndwr’s Way at Welshpool and Knighton
- Wye Valley Walk at Hay on Wye and Chepstow
- Severn Way at Welshpool
- Shropshire Way at Churchtown (between Mellington and Knighton)

Easy walking along the ridge ending with a hike down Hay Bluff beside the Gospel Pass – Wales’ highest motorable road. End the day by sampling the delights of Hay-on-Wye, the world-famous book town. At Hay Offa’s Dyke Path connects with Wye Valley Walk.

Day 6: Hay-on-Wye to Kington 15 miles/24 kms
More great hiking country as the walking route heads along the Wye Valley through an area of conifer woods known as Bettws Dingle to the hamlet of Newchurch. Then through the village of Gladestry and along the Hergest Ridge to the town of Kington is your overnight stay.
Day 7: Kington to Knighton 13 miles/21 kms
Spectacular views and lovely walking across springy turf as you hike through the Welsh county of Powys. There’s a thriving craft tradition in Mid Wales too, with many artists deriving their inspiration from the landscape of Wales. At Hawthorn Hill you can see the once endangered Red Kite, a striking bird of prey which has become an emblem of Mid Wales. At Knighton, the “Town on the Dyke”, Offa’s Dyke Path connects with Glyndwr’s Way.
Day 8: Knighton to Mellington 14 miles/22.5 kms
Walking across the ancient drovers’ road, the Kerry Ridgeway , which has survived almost intact for centuries in this unspoilt corner of the Welsh Marches. The Offa’s Dyke Path walking trail hikes through pretty villages, before an exhilarating hike onto Llanfair Hill. The Offa’s Dyke itself is well-preserved on this airy section of the walking path. During todays walk you share the path for a few miles with the Shopshire Way.
Day 9: Mellington to Welshpool 17 miles/27 kms
After crossing the Plain of Montgomery and climbing to Beacon Ring hill fort, the trail drops down to the River Severn at Welshpool where Offa’s Dyke Path connects again with Glyndwr’s Way and Severn Way.
Optional Day(s) : Exploring Welshpool
There is so much to see in Welshpool that it is worth spending an extra day/s to visit Powis Castle, or take a trip on the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway.
Day 10: Welshpool to Llanymynech 9 miles/14.5 kms
Walking on from Chirk, Chirk Castle makes a worthwhile detour today. A 700-year old fortress surrounded by a medieval hunting park, you can enjoy views over Wales and England from the roof.
Day 11: Llanymynech to Chirk 14 miles/22.5 kms
From Llanymynech the Offa’s Dyke Path winds its way to Nantmawr then across the River Morda just outside Oswestry, which is a short detour off the route. The walking path crosses the Old Oswestry Racecourse and very soon comes to Chirk.
Day 12: Chirk to Llangollen 7.5 miles/12 kms
Chirk Castle makes a worthwhile detour today. A 700-year old fortress surrounded by a medieval hunting park with views over Wales and England. As you approach Llangollen you come to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. A thousand feet in length and 126 feet above the River Dee. Don’t miss Plas Newydd, a beautiful black-and-white timbered building at the heart of this charming town, once home to the “Ladies of Llangollen”. Llangollen has much to offer the visitor; its famous canal, steam railway and beautiful river. A great place to take a rest day to sample Welsh life.
Optional Day(s) : exploring Llangollen
Spend extra some time exploring Llangollen to relax, visit the house of the “Ladies of Llangollen”, take a trip on the steam train or a horse drawn canal boat trip.
Day 13: Llangollen to Clwyd Gate 14 miles/23 kms
Walking on from Llangollen you reach the ruins of Castell Dinas Bran, a medieval fort and then the route follows in the shadow of the escarpment of Trevor Rocks and Eglwyseg Mountain. This is followed by a great walk across open moorland to Pen-y-stryt and Clwyd Gate.

A more challenging hiking day today as you cross the Welsh Clwydian Hills. There is ample recompense in the form of wonderful views and a number of Iron Age hill-forts to explore.
