The Wicklow Way walking holiday is on a way-marked walking route through the heather-clad Wicklow Mountains National Park from Clonegal to Marley Park, via Shillelagh, Glendalough with it’s Monastic City and cathedral, round tower and lakes, the Guinness Estate, the stunning gardens and waterfalls at Powerscourt and the charming village of Enniskerry.
You end, or start, your Wicklow Way walking holiday in Ireland’s capital city of Dublin.
The Wicklow Way walking holiday begins, or ends, at Clonegal and is an 96-mile hiking tour through Ireland’s stunning Wicklow Mountains. Our total mileage of 96 miles includes walking distances to accommodations.
Wicklow is known as the Garden of Ireland and provides some of the best mixture of landscape Ireland has to offer, with a great selection of Irish pubs and bars along the way.
The Wicklow Way walking holiday is on one of Ireland’s national walking routes, along with the Kerry Way and the Dingle Way, and was devised by Dubliner J.B Walker in 1966.
You can do the Wicklow Way walking holiday over 8 days at about 12 miles per day. Our mileages include walking distances to accommodations.

Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Bunclody
To start your walking holiday on the Wicklow Way you arrive at the village of Bunclody for your overnight stay. Bunclody is served by a bus service from Dublin.
Day 2: Bunclody or Clonegal to Shillelagh 15.5 miles/25kms
The day starts with a short transfer or walk to Clonegal, the starting point of The Wicklow Way, surrounded by rolling farmland and forests. The 17th century village of Shillelagh makes a good overnight stop with its pubs. Famous for giving its name to irish Hawthorn stick “The Shillelagh”.
Day 3: Shillelagh to Tinahely 11.5 miles/18.5kms
Hiking on from Shillelagh the trail passes the church of St Finian. This holy man is credited with bringing Christianity to the Wicklow area. Your overnight stay is at the town of Tinahely on the banks of the River Derry. This lovely village was rebuilt in 1860s after being destroyed in the rebellion of 1798.
Day 4: Tinahely to Moyne 8 miles/13kms
Walking on from Tinahely the trail enters forest tracks before emerging on to open mountainside. The trail offers great views back towards the south and over the two Irish counties of Carlow and Wicklow. The overnight stop is at Moyne and is reached via an old ring fort.
Day 5: Moyne to Glenmalure 15 miles/24kms
Today’s walking is very varied with forest trails through the beautiful valley of the River Ow, at the bottom of Lugnaquillia the tallest of the Wicklow mountains at 925m/1039ft. You finish today’s walk along Ireland’s longest glacial valley stretching over 10 miles/16 kms, The Glenmalure Valley. You stay overnight a the small village of Glenmalure .
Day 6: Glenmalure to Glendalough 9 miles/14.5km
You are now in the heart of The Wicklow Mountains. The Wicklow Way hiking trail passes the stunning Glenmalure Waterfall and the edge of Mullacor Mountain before entering the Valley of Glandalough with its two lakes and 6th century Monastic City of Glandalough. This is one of The Wicklow Way’s highlights and worth spending some time exploring.

Spend an extra day enjoying the Glandalough Valley, one or Ireland’s hidden gems.
Day 7: Glendalough to Roundwood 7 miles/11kms
A slightly shorter walking day today allowing time to explore Ireland’s highest village of Roundwood at 260m/780ft and perhaps soak up the atmosphere in a traditional Irish pub. Optional walks up Scarr Mountain or round Roundwoods Reservoirs can be included for the restless.
Day 8: Roundwood to Enniskerry 16.5 miles/26.5kms
Today’s walking is another highlight of The Wicklow Way with stunning views of Lough Dan and Lough Tay. This area has been used to film some of the most popular films made in Ireland: “Brave Heart” and “King Arthur” to name a couple. You hike past the original home of the Guinness family, the Powerscourt estate, which offers great views of Ireland’s longest waterfall, Powerscourt. You stay overnight at Enniskerry, one of the most beautiful villages in all the Wicklow Mountains.
Day 9: Enniskerry to Marlay Park/Dublin 13.5 miles/22kms
Today’s walking is another highlight of The Wicklow Way, with stunning views over the capital city of Dublin from Prince William’s Seat. The views over towards the Irish Sea and back towards The Wicklow Mountains add to the sense of achievement as you end your hiking tour in the city of Dublin.
