Enjoy a self-guided Copper Trail walking holiday on the 57 mile moorland route of the Copper Trail on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall.

This circular trail meanders across rolling moorland, through quaint villages, old mine workings, over packhorse bridges, and past ancient granite crosses, stone circles and quoits.
You can walk this wonderful trail over
6 days at about 10 miles per day.

A fascinating walk through history; with prehistoric stone circles, quoits and crosses from medieval times, old railways, abandoned china clay and granite quarries, and relics of tin and copper mines which give this trail its name.

Our self-guided walking holidays are designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind and can be tailor-made to your own personal requirements.

The routes are clearly way-marked to provide reassurance on your hiking vacation.

We use a selection of guest houses, inns or small hotels with en-suite or private bathroom to ensure you are well rested each night after a busy day hiking and sightseeing. Rest assured that all our accommodation walking holiday providers are hand-picked and offer you that famous British hospitality.

Special diets can be catered for, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free.

We organize the luggage transfer so your bags are at your next accommodation when you arrive. We try to get your bags delivered by 4pm, but this may be delayed due to road conditions.

Let’s Go Walking has developed one of the largest selection of walking holidays.
Our offices are staffed 9am to 9pm during our walking season (March to September) to ensure your walking holiday runs without a hitch.

All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing.  The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.

This walking holiday in the UK operates March to September and in either direction.

The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.

Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of the UK or Ireland. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.

Day 1: Arrive at Bodmin
You make your own way to Bodmin. Bodmin has good rail and coach connections.

Optional Day: Extra day in Bodmin  
Spend a day relaxing in Bodmin and maybe take a trip on The Bodmin & Wenford Sream Railway Castle or visit one of Cornwall’s historic Jail’s Bodmin Jail

Day 2: Bodmin to Blisland         7 miles
The Copper Trail follows the Camel Trail from Bodmin to Tresarret. The Camel Trail follows the old railway line created in 1834 to transport china clay and granite, thought to be one of the first in the world. The River Camel follows along beside the trail on its way to the Atlantic. A short walk takes you to the picturesque village of Blisland .

Day 3: Blisland to Camelford          9 miles
Walking north from Blisland the Copper Trail passes De Lank Quarry. Granite from here was used to build many well known London landmarks: Blackfriars Bridge, Putney Bridge, Tower Bridge, The Thames Embankment, New Scotland Yard and The Cenotaph to name but a few. After walking through St Breward the Copper Trail continues northward across Bodmin Moor to Camelford for your overnight stay.

Optional Day in Camelford: to visit Roughtor and St Michaels Chapel     6 miles
An optional day to climb Roughtor (pronounced row tor as in cow). This is one of the highest points in Cornwall at 1315ft and is a very pleasant 3 mile stroll from Camelford. The rugged crest of granite shelters the remains of the medieval chapel of St Michael.

Day 4: Camelford to Five Lanes     10.5 miles
Leaving Camelford the Copper Trail heads east across Bodmin Moor. You walk alongside Crowdy Reservoir, through Davidstow Woods and across the disused Davidstow Airfield used by the RAF and USAF during the Second World War The Wesley Cottage in Duck Street, Trewint where John Wesley, the Methodist preacher stayed in the mid 1700s is worth a visit before finishing today’s walk at Five Lanes. A short half mile diversion takes you to the pretty village to Altarnun.

Day 5: Five Lanes to Minions        9 miles
Walking the Copper Trail today you pass Treburland Mines where tin, copper, manganese and wolfram were mined. You walk through the village of North Hill and cross the River Lyner at Berriowbridge. At the quiet village of Henwood it is difficult to imagine that 150 years ago there were up to 12 engine houses at the centre of the industrial revolution. The Cheesewring rock formation can be seen on the right as you return to the village of Minions.

Day 6: Minions to Colliford Lake          11.5 miles
The walking route follows the old Liskeard and Caradon Railway built in the 1840’s to serve the mines and granite quarries of the Minions area. The ruined engine house of the South Caradon Mine can be seen on across the valley. Today’s highlight is Trethevy Quoit, possibly Cornwall’s oldest man made structure, a tomb, thought to date back to 4500BC. You walk through the village of St Cleer, cross the River Fowey at Golitha Falls and finish today’s walk at Colliford Lake.

Day 7: Colliford Lake to Bodmin               11 miles
Today you walk  from Colliford Lake and then hike around Carburrow Tor to the villages of Warleggan and Mount. The Copper Trail makes its way through Cardinham Woods to Bodmin, the county town of Cornwall. Bodmin Jail of worth a visit and lovers of steam will enjoy the Bodmin and Wenford restored steam railway.
