This self guided Avon Valley Path walking holiday takes in the counties of Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire and is a great introduction to walking holidays.
The Avon Valley Path passes through some of the River Avon’s most spectacular landscapes full of wildlife and heritage.
The Avon Valley Path walking holiday can be combined with:
- the Clarendon Way (connecting at Salisbury),
- the Sarsen Way (connecting at Salisbury),
- or the Stour Valley Way (connecting at Christchurch)
for a longer walking holiday.
Our self-guided walking holidays are designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind and can be tailor-made to your own personal requirements.
The routes are clearly way-marked to provide reassurance on your hiking vacation.
We use a selection of guest houses, inns or small hotels with en-suite or private bathroom to ensure you are well rested each night after a busy day hiking and sightseeing. Rest assured that all our accommodation walking holiday providers are hand-picked and offer you that famous British hospitality.
Special diets can be catered for, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free.
We organize the luggage transfer so your bags are at your next accommodation when you arrive. We try to get your bags delivered by 4pm, but this may be delayed due to road conditions.

Our offices are staffed 9am to 9pm during our walking season (March to September) to ensure your walking holiday runs without a hitch.
All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing. The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.
This walking holiday in the UK operates March to September and in either direction.
The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.
Why not combine this walk with a hiking tour in another part of the UK or Ireland. Our staff will be happy to advise on necessary transfers.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive at Salisbury
To start your walking holiday you make your own to Salisbury. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided river walking holiday.

Take an extra day to explore this interesting city.
Day 2: Salisbury to Woodfalls 10 miles easy
Before you leave Salisbury in Wiltshire visit its cathedral dating back to the 12th century and historic buildings. Leave by the 700 year old Harnham Bridge over the River Avon. The path crosses the River Ebble near Odstock. This area has many little villages full of historic buildings and pubs. The path follows the canal built in 17th century and through water meadows. There is plenty of time to explore the shops, villages and pubs on route.
Day 3: Woodfalls to Fordingbridge 6 miles easy
The Avon Valley Path winds through woodlands and pastures before crossing into Hampshire and the New Forest. Through farm land and water meadows, over a suspension bridge, along an old railway line to Fordingbridge.
Day 4: Fordingbridge to Ringwood 9 miles easy
Fordingbridge is a busy market town with many fine shops and pubs with a magnificent seven arch bridge crossing the river. Soon after leaving the town the path passes a trout farm. The farm at Turmer is famous for still using heavy horses to work the land, a rare site in deed in the 21st century. As the path reaches Ringwood it passes lakes which were former gravel pits, now a haven for wildlife.
Day 5: Ringwood to Christchurch 10 miles easy
Ringwood is a busy market town with a very busy Wednesday market and many fine shops and pubs. The path continues via water meadows and old railway paths. On to Sopley, a charming village with a mill mentioned in the Doomsday book. The path passes through the grounds of Sopley Park, the former home of the owners of the Schweppes Company. Soon the path enters Christchurch with its fine shops, historic harbour and Priory built in 1094, the official end of the path. Christchurch is a great place to spend a few days, and extra nights can be arranged.

Take an extra day to explore this interesting town. A great extra day walking can be made around Christchurch Harbour via Hengistbury Head and the ferry across to Muddiford.
Day 6: Depart after breakfast
Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring the Christchurch area
