Walk Cumbria Way, one of England’s long distance walking trails, walking in the far North of England from Ulverston via Coniston, Great Langdale, Stake Pass, Borrowdale, Keswick, Caldbeck and Carlisle.

The Cumbria Way begins at Ulverston and is an 82 mile walking holiday through the stunning scenery of the Lake District National Park in northern England, ending at Carlisle.

On this walking holiday you hike through undulating pastures, farms and open commons and experience stunning views of Coniston Water. You skirt Tarn Hows, cross River Brathay at Skelwith Bridge and follow Great Langdale Beck, beneath the imposing Langdale Fell, to Dungeon Ghyll.

You are now in the very heart of Lakeland, crossing Stake Pass at 1,575ft (480m), and meandering through Borrowdale to Derwentwater and Keswick. You then flank Lonscale Fell and follow Dash Beck down to Bassenthwaite and around the back of Skidda to Caldbeck. The walk ends by following the River Caldew into Carlisle.

Our self-guided walking holidays are designed with your comfort and enjoyment in mind and can be tailor-made to your own personal requirements.

The routes are clearly way-marked to provide reassurance on your hiking vacation.

We use a selection of guest houses, inns or small hotels with en-suite or private bathroom to ensure you are well rested each night after a busy day hiking and sightseeing. Rest assured that all our accommodation walking holiday providers are hand-picked and offer you that famous British hospitality.

Special diets can be catered for, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free.

We organize the luggage transfer so your bags are at your next accommodation when you arrive. We try to get your bags delivered by 4pm, but this may be delayed due to road conditions.

Let’s Go Walking has developed one of the largest selection of walking holidays.
Our offices are staffed 9am to 9pm during our walking season (March to September) to ensure your walking holiday runs without a hitch.

All our walking holidays are self-guided and you must be a confident map reader and able to navigate from a compass bearing.  The weather in the UK and Ireland can change quickly effecting visibility and underfoot conditions. It is important to carry a selection of clothing with you on your hike each day to cope with changing weather conditions. If you are not confident of completing any days walk, do not set out.

This walking holiday in the UK operates March to September and in either direction.

The daily distances are only a suggestion. If you would like to walk longer or shorter distances, we can arrange that too.
Our stated distances include mileage to the accommodation or pickup point and so may not agree with the guide book mileages.
Rest days can be taken in any location.

Day 1: Arrive Ulverston
To start your walking holiday on The Cumbria Way walking trail you make your own way to Ulverston. We can assist with coach or train transfers if necessary. Car parking is available for the duration of your self-guided walking holiday in the Lake District. The Cumbria Way connects with the Cumbria Coastal Way in Ulverston.

Day 2: Ulverston to Lowick            6.5 miles
Leaving Ulverston on this walking holiday you hike through undulating pastures and farms with a tantalizing glimpse of Coniston Water and the Old Man of Coniston. Looking back you see the wide panorama of Morecambe Bay.

Day 3: Lowick to Consiton             9.5 miles
The walking trail moves onto open common land as you walk beside Coniston Water, the fourth largest of the English Lakes, to Coniston. There is plenty to see in Coniston, including the John Ruskin museum and also Brantwood where he lived beside Coniston Water. There are mementos of Donald Campbell, the water speed record breaker, at the Sun Hotel. Why not spend an extra day in Coniston and take a launch around the lake, or a hike to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston.

Day 4: Coniston to Great Langdale    13 miles

Leaving Coniston you skirt Tarn Hows, then head towards Colwith Force and Skelwith Force, two magnificent waterfalls on the River Brathay. You cross the river at Skelwith Bridge and follow Great Langdale Beck, beneath the imposing Langdale Pikes, to Dungeon Ghyll in Great Langdale.

Day 5: Great Langdale to Rosthwaite       8 miles
You are now in the very heart of Lakeland, leaving Langdale and Dungeon Ghyll by way of the zigzag path going up to Stake Pass at 1,575ft (480m). This was once a packhorse trail linking Langdale and Borrowdale. You descend from Stake Pass to Langstrath via further zigzags alongside very pleasant waterfalls, then alongside Stonethwaite Beck to Rosthwaite.

Day 6: Rosthwaite to Keswick          8 miles
Today you are walking alongside River Derwent in the valley of Borrowdale as it flows into Derwentwater. As Derwentwater comes into view on the right, Catbells can be seen on the left. You hike along the lakeshore to Keswick, past several of the landing stages for the launches which ply Derwentwater. Why not spend an extra night in Keswick as there is plenty to see and do, including the Pencil Museum. .

Day 7: Keswick to Bassenthwaite     10.5 miles
Leaving Keswick on the Cumbria Way, you hike up the lower slopes of Lonscale Fell to Lonscale Crags with the deep gorge of Glenderaterra Valley below. Then after crossing Salehow Beck you come to the uninhabited Skiddaw House at 1542ft/470m.
On reaching the stunning Whitewater Dash waterfall you follow Dash Beck down to Bassenthwaite.

Day 8: Bassenthwaite to Caldbeck    11 miles
Today’s walking on the Cumbria Way is along country lanes and lower fell slopes. Leaving Bassenthwaite you hike around the back of Skidda via Orthwaite, Longlands, Branthwaite, Fell Side and Nether Row to Caldbeck.

Day 9: Caldbeck to Carlisle            15 miles

On this last day of your walking holiday on The Cumbria Way you follow the River Caldew via the villages of Sebergham and Dalston into Carlisle. The Cumbria Way connect with Hadrian’s Wall Path and Cumbria Coastal Way in Carlisle.

Depart after Breakfast or extend your holiday walking and spend some time exploring Cumberland in England’s Lake District and the Scottish Borders.
